Letter to the Chairs and Ranking Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, Re: High Consideration for Flood Protection Appropriations

Location: Washington, DC

Harkin, Grassley Request High Consideration for Flood Protection Appropriations

Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley today highlighted the need for top consideration of appropriations requests designed to help with flood protection throughout Iowa. The requests before the Committee are within the capabilities of the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Senators sent a letter to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of both the full Appropriations Committee as well as the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development. The Subcommittee is expected to consider projects for the bill tomorrow.

"While we deal with the immediate needs of Iowans and Iowa communities that were devastated by this historic disaster, we must also focus on preventing and lessening the impact of future floods. Now is the time to begin rebuilding our flood control infrastructure, and I will fight to ensure the federal government is a full partner in that effort," Harkin said.

"Iowans have seen the devastating impact of 500 year floods. Both heartache and resiliency are on full display throughout Eastern Iowa. The projects we submitted to the Committee may help alleviate future problems, so I hope the members will give our requests full consideration," Grassley said.

Dear Chairmen and Ranking Members,

Please take into consideration the recent devastating floods Iowa has experienced while considering the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2009. We understand the challenges of determining how to fund the numerous projects throughout the United States. However, many of the Iowa projects we submitted to the Committee are aimed at flood protection and flood damage reduction. These projects are vital to Iowa's recovery and enhanced flood protection in our State.

Thank you for your consideration and attention to this request.

Charles E. Grassley
U.S. Senator

Tom Harkin
U.S. Senator
