Smith Hails Supreme Court Decision Overturning Handgun Ban
Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today issued the following statement praising the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold a federal appeals court ruling overturning a law prohibiting private citizens from possessing handguns in the District of Columbia.
"The Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees an individual's right to keep and bear arms. As a member of the National Rifle Association and the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, I want to commend the justices for this decision protecting all Americans' right to gun ownership," Smith said.
"Laws such as this one fly in the face of our heritage. As Americans, we have the right to defend ourselves and, under the Constitution, we are clearly guaranteed this right."
The landmark decision marks the first time the Supreme Court has ruled on the Second Amendment since 1939. The handgun ban had been in place in the District of Columbia since 1976.
Smith is a cosponsor of legislation which would have repealed the ban on firearms in the District of Columbia.
