Blunt Statement on February Jobs Report

Southwest Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt released the following statement today after the Labor Department issued an employment report for February indicating a net loss of 63,000 jobs - only days after Democrats released a budget plan for 2009 calling for the largest tax increase in American history:

"Today's jobs report demonstrates in clear terms the strain being felt by American families right now - a strain that'd worsen dramatically if Democrats in Congress are successful in increasing their taxes by as much as $683 billion over the next five years.

"Unfortunately, the budget plan they offered this week is a blueprint for reckless spending and historic tax hikes - founded on the premise that just about every measure of pro-growth tax relief Republicans fought to advance this decade will be retired, sunsetted, or outright eliminated.

"In an economic landscape where anxiety is being driven by record energy prices, an uneven housing market, and rising foods costs, the last thing the American people either need or want right now is another claim on their already strained budgets.

"As the budget process advances, Republicans will be standing firm to ensure that taxpayer interests - and not just political ones - will be represented in the upcoming budget debate."
