SUNUNU AND VA SECRETARY DISCUSS NEED FOR EXPANDED CARE FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE VETERANS
Sununu, Secretary Peake meet in Manchester
United States Senator John Sununu (R-NH) today (6/24) met with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary James B. Peake at the Manchester Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in New Hampshire to discuss the need to expand care for New Hampshire veterans. Dr. Marc Levenson, Director of the VAMC, and Dr. Michael Mayo-Smith, VA New England Network Director, also attended the meeting.
Sununu issued the following statement at the conclusion of the early morning meeting:
"I am pleased Secretary Peake accepted my invitation to meet this morning to discuss a number of issues important to New Hampshire's veterans, including the need to return Manchester to a full-service hospital. When Granite State veterans are forced to travel out of the State to receive medical care, it can be a hardship for them and their families. If a medical procedure, such as radiation treatment, is not available at the Manchester VA hospital, it should be provided at another local health care facility. I also informed Secretary Peake of the need for a veterans' center in Keene. Senator Gregg and I were able to obtain funding to open a center in the Berlin area, but veterans services are also needed in the western part of the State.
"I thanked the Secretary for coming to New Hampshire to tour the Manchester facility and learn more about the needs of the veterans it serves. I look forward to continuing to work with him and the staff of the VAMC to ensure that Granite State veterans have access to high quality, timely, and affordable medical care."
