Happy Independence Day!

Statement

Happy Independence Day!

Today we mark the birth of a nation, the greatest nation. We remember the men and women who faced treason to build a more perfect union, who flew in the face of a government so those who came after would have freedoms never known by a people of any nation.

For many, it is the start-of-summer holiday, marked by barbecues and outdoor festivals and firework displays.

But for too many this year, minds will drift to loved ones over seas fighting in Iraq. We should all take pause today to remember our soldiers, where ever they are stationed. We should pray for their safety and for their safe return.

Today we travel to Lena and Canton and the Reservoir. We'll take part in the festivals and the fireworks — and you can bet the barbecue. But most everyone on this campaign has a loved one stationed far away. These people — and their fellow soldiers — will never be far from our thoughts.
