Labor-HHS Funding Bill Approved By Appropriations Committee

Nearly $10 Million Included for South Dakota

U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) helped push the FY 2009 Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education spending bill through the full Appropriations Committee today, retaining the full $9.83 million for South Dakota projects he secured in the subcommittee. The bill now moves to the full Senate for approval.

The bill includes provisions to fully fund the National Children's Study with $3.65 million for South Dakota State University (SDSU), $200,000 for suicide prevention programs on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, and $2.57 billion for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

"The projects and programs in this bill mean real health care improvement for South Dakotans," Johnson said. "I am pleased the committee has moved swiftly on this bill, which includes vital funding for health care and education targeting our most underserved communities in the state."
