Cantwell Statement on Supreme Court Decision Involving Snohomish County Public Utility District

Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) issued the following statement following the Supreme Court's decision involving the Snohomish County Public Utility District:

"I am pleased that the Supreme Court made clear that contracts should not serve as a safeguard for illegal market manipulation. Today, the Court found that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission acted arbitrarily when it refused to provide relief to Snohomish ratepayers from contracts entered into at the height of the Western Power Crisis, when markets were subject to massive Enron-style manipulation. While the Court's decision means the fight to protect consumers' interests can continue, I am disappointed the Court's rationale undermines the fundamental ‘just and reasonable' standard for wholesale electricity rates."
