Issue Position: Honoring Our Veterans

A key component of our defense is to maintain our armed forces at their optimum strength and to reward them in such a way as to promote morale. Sadly, neither the strength of our military nor its morale have been well-served by the conflicts in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Not only have our troops lacked the necessary political support from the Bush Administration, but they have been even further abandoned by Republicans in Congress and the Bush Administration when they come home. When I am elected to Congress, I will:

* Vigorously support the expansion of GI educational benefits. The Post -9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act (HR5740) was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 21, 2008. My opponent voted against this much needed legislation.

* Work to ensure that all VA (Veterans' Administration) medical facilities have the resources to provide our veterans with the medical care they need and have been promised. We must honor our commitment to care for these wounded veterans who bear both physical and psychological scars from their time served in the US military.

* Work to see to it that Congress maintains an aggressive oversight posture of any administration - - Republican and Democrat alike - - to maximize the sensible and economical use of our armed forces.
