Myers: Bush Apologist on Economy

Democratic congressional candidate John Adler today slammed his Republican opponent in the Third District as a "Bush apologist" for continuing to insist that the U.S. economy is sound even as unemployment figures skyrocket and millions of Americans get hammered by the soaring costs of gasoline, groceries, and other consumer goods.

Adler questioned how Myers could stubbornly cling to George W. Bush's economic agenda in light of a U.S. Department of Labor report showing that the nation's unemployment rate increased to 5.5 percent in May -- the largest monthly rise since 1986. All told, 325,000 Americans have lost their jobs since the first of the year, with nearly 50,000 handed their pink slips in May alone.

"How can Mayor Myers possibly bring a new economic policy to Washington if he believes the status-quo policies of President Bush are working just fine?" Adler said. "A candidate who believes 'the economy is basically strong' when gas prices have hit $4-a-gallon, thousands of families can't afford to pay their mortgages, and 325,000 people have lost their jobs in this year alone is a candidate out of touch with reality. I would like to know which economy Mayor Myers was referring to when he said it was 'basically strong'."

Adler said he is running because he understands the plight of the district's middle-class families and will promote economic policies that will create jobs and lower taxes. His opponent, on the other hand, is out of touch with the struggles of middle-class families and small businesses and thus incapable of bringing change to Washington.

"People in this district and throughout the country deserve a better economy and a Congress that is sensitive to their daily concerns," Adler said. "While Mayor Myers believes the status-quo is fine, I am committed to working as hard as I can to bring about change."

Adler said he will promote an economic agenda that will invest in jobs at home and not reward companies for shipping them overseas; push for tax cuts that will benefit middle class families and eliminate billions of dollars in subsidies for big oil companies; strengthen America as a leader in the world economy; and reduce our dependence on foreign oil by investing in clean, alternative energy sources such as wind and solar.

"We need new leaders and fresh ideas to take our country in a new direction - away from the failed policies of President Bush," Adler said. "I will continue to offer a sharp contrast from Mayor Myers when it comes to supporting the failed policies of the past represented by President Bush and the Republicans in Congress. I will fight for innovative approaches that help stimulate our economy and create new jobs."
