A Country That Forgets Its Seniors Has Lost Its Soul

As a part of her commitment to seniors, Senator Joan Fitz-Gerald visited a retirement home in Broomfield yesterday and will be at Malley Healthcare and Rehabilitation of Northglenn on Friday.

It is time for America to renew our commitment to our seniors. With the economy showing signs of distress and the war in Iraq, sometimes people forget about our seniors. Seniors are being squeezed from all sides with rising health care costs, expensive prescription drugs and increasing heating and fuel costs.

As a member of Congress, I would fight to restore the Bush/Cheney budget cuts and support efforts to craft a solution to put Social Security and Medicare back on a firm financial footing. At the same time I would join the effort to protect pension and retirement funds by updating the Employee Retirement Income Security (ERISA).

I have always been a friend to seniors. On issues ranging from health care to increased funding for crucial programs to benefit older Coloradans, I have a 100 percent rating with the AARP and the Colorado Senior Lobby. I supported increased funding for the Older Coloradans Cash Fund and supported the creation of the Supplemental Old Age Pension Health and Medical Care Program.

We must not forget the people who have built this country and given us so much. A country that forgets its seniors, has lost its soul. We must reaffirm our commitment to our nations' seniors.
