Hare: May Jobs Report Shows Need to Adopt TRADE Act, Extend Unemployment Benefits

Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL), a member of the House Trade Working Group, today released the following statement after the Department of Labor reported that the U.S. economy lost 49,000 jobs in May.

"The news that we have now lost over 300,000 jobs this year highlights the urgent need to fix our broken trade policies. This week, members of the House and Senate introduced the TRADE Act—legislation that requires a review and possible renegotiation of existing trade agreements and sets the terms of what should and should not be in future deals. With our economy in full-out hemorrhaging mode, the time to adopt the TRADE Act is now.

"Today's jobs report is also a reminder that the Iraq/Afghanistan Supplemental Appropriations bill should include an extension of unemployment benefits. American workers are hurting and we have a moral obligation to provide them some relief."
