Sen. Klobuchar Offers Support to People of Burma

'A Tragedy Not Just for the People of Burma, But for All of Us.'

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar today issued the following statement about the cyclone disaster in Burma:

"On behalf of Minnesota, I extend my sympathy and support to the people of Burma in the aftermath of the deadly cyclone that devastated their country over the weekend."

"When a disaster of this terrible scale occurs, it is a tragedy not just for the people of Burma, but for all of us. It is of special significance to Minnesota, because we are home to thousands of people from Burma, including the largest U.S. concentration of Karen refugees who have been victims of religious and ethnic persecution under Burma's military regime."

"Burma is a country whose people have already suffered greatly under a repressive dictatorship. For the safety and health of its people, I urge the government of Burma to accept the many offers of aid and assistance from the United States, the United Nations and countries around the world."
