Republican Challenges Lincoln Davis

Franklin businessman Monty Lankford toured parts of Tennessee today to announce his candidacy for the 4th congressional district.

The republican, who most recently raised money for Fred Thompson's failed presidential bid, is challenging Pall Mall Democrat Lincoln Davis. The hook-shaped district runs west of Franklin, down through Pulaski, and across the Cumberland Plateau up to the Kentucky Border.

At a stop in Nashville today, Lankford says congress has become too polarized and he'd like to work in a bi-partisan fashion. But he says that only goes so far.

"Well I'd certainly like to work with any of them that work with our ideology. I'm not willing to compromise our values and to me, unfortunately, that is what Lincoln has done. He'll talk about his values and he'll say for instance, ‘I'm pro-life,' but he goes to Washington and votes for Nancy Pelosi which totally knocks him out of the ability to push that agenda."

Congressional democrats elected Pelosi to be speaker of the House in January of last year.

Lankford runs a medical-supply distribution company and says as a small business owner, providing health insurance is a challenge.

"We need to make it to where small companies, small businesses, can buy in a pool like large corporations. We need to make it to where all Americans can have health insurance and making it affordable buy letting them buy it in a big pool."

Lankford significantly out-raised Davis in the first quarter of this year garnering more than 225-thousand dollars to Davis' 53-thousand. However both candidates have about 200-thousand dollars in cash-on-hand.

Davis has held the seat since 2003. Another Republican, Kent Greenough, has said he'll run against Lankford in the August primary, but has yet to file a campaign finance report.
