Press Release

Date: May 30, 2008
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas Taxes

Congressman John Kline is sponsoring the Gas Tax Relief and Earmark Moratorium Act which will impose a one-year moratorium on earmarks and use the savings to provide Americans relief at the gas pump this summer.

"As many Minnesotans begin their summer travel that includes vacations and weekends at the lake, this will offer much-needed relief," Kline said. "By putting a one-year hold on wasteful pork projects while easing Americans' pain at the pumps and addressing improvements to our nation's infrastructure, this legislation simultaneously focuses on important energy, economic and transportation concerns."

The Gas Tax Relief and Earmark Moratorium Act:

- Provides a Gasoline Tax Holiday by suspending the federal 18.4-cent per gallon gas tax from
Memorial Day through Labor Day.
- Eliminates pork-barrel projects for one year by imposing a moratorium on earmarks for this
year, which translates to a savings of $14.8 billion.
- Strengthens the Highway Trust Fund by reimbursing any revenue lost from the tax holiday by
using a portion of the savings from the moratorium on earmarks.
- Reduces the federal deficit by using the remainder of the savings from the moratorium on
earmarks to pay down our national debt.

In his third term in Congress, Kline is a member of the House Ethics Committee, Armed Services Committee, and the Education and Labor Committee.
