Sullivan Votes to Protect the Rights of Patients with Genetically Linked Illnesses

"Scientific breakthroughs have allowed many Americans to undergo genetic screening and testing in order to detect genetically linked illnesses and health problems before they arise. Early intervention and prevention, even for unborn fetuses, have brought hope and an improved quality of life to many Americans who suffer from genetic disorders.

"However, some individuals have been reluctant to undergo these possibly life changing tests for fear that they may be discriminated against by their employer or insurance company for genetic predispositions to certain diseases. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act prohibits the use of genetic information in employment decisions, including hiring, firing, job assignments and promotions. This important legislation also bars group health plans from raising premiums or establishing enrollment restrictions for individuals based on their genetic information. By ensuring that all patients, including the unborn, who undergo genetic testing are treated as equally as their peers, H.R. 493 protects American families from unwarranted discrimination.
