Senator Stevens Signs Up for Capitol Hill WalkingWorks Challenge

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) today registered to participate in a physical fitness challenge to benefit charity while encouraging personal health.

"Exercising and staying fit have long been a priority for me. I challenge all Alaskans to join me and my staff in the Capitol Hill WalkingWorks Challenge," said Senator Stevens. "Together we can increase our daily physical activity and support the Special Olympics, a very worthy cause."

The WalkingWorks Challenge is being sponsored by the BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) Association as part of the annual Senate Health Fair. BCBS will make a donation to the Special Olympics in the name of the Congressional staff that walks the greatest distance at the end of the six-week contest.

The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recommends 30 minutes of walking a day, five days a week, or 10,000 steps daily, to produce the best long-term health benefits for most individuals. Participants are encouraged to log their walking exercise to demonstrate a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

"Americans are increasingly affected by obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes," said Senator Stevens. "Every precaution we can take to guarantee our health and the health of our children is well worth taking."
