In a historic election for Hoosier Democrats, early this morning Jill Long Thompson was officially declared the winner of the Democratic nomination for Governor of Indiana.

A former professional educator, city councilwoman, Congresswoman and U.S. Under Secretary of Agriculture, Long Thompson becomes the first woman in Indiana history to secure the gubernatorial nomination of either major political party.

"I am truly humbled and honored by the trust that the voters have placed in me," said Long Thompson, who celebrated Election night with supporters at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne. "Throughout this campaign, we laid out a clear vision for rebuilding Indiana's economy, increasing access to affordable healthcare and for improving our schools - and Hoosiers responded."

"With the primary behind us, we must now come together as Democrats to take on Mitch Daniels and put Indiana back on track," added Long Thompson. "Hoosiers are ready for new leadership, new ideas and a new direction and that's what I offer."

Long Thompson also congratulated her primary opponent, Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger on his campaign.

"I want to thank Jim Schellinger for running a spirited campaign and helping to expand our party. Don and I enjoyed getting to know Jim and Laura throughout this process - and we know that they will continue to play an important role in the Democratic Party for many years to come," said Long Thompson." I wish them all the best and look forward to working with them to defeat Mitch Daniels this fall. "

With the nomination secured, Long Thompson will spend the next several weeks traveling the state talking to voters, selecting a running mate, raising funds and expanding her campaign's grassroots network.
