Hoeven: BNSF Needs To Roll Back Shipping Rate Increase

BISMARCK, N.D. - Gov. John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to an announced rate increase by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF):

"Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway's move to increase shipping rates $100 or more a car is the wrong direction for North Dakota shippers and producers. It is especially wrong after months of delayed service, which has resulted in great expense and inconvenience for our elevators and managers.

"Last winter, we brought BNSF before the federal Surface Transportation Board and secured a pledge from the railroad to catch up to within 1,000 cars by April 1st. No sooner did they claim to have accomplished that, than they raised rates. This most recent rate increase strengthens our commitment and resolve to pushing our rate complaint case in order to stop the unfair business practices of BNSF."
