Hagan on Equal Pay Day: Senate Must Pass Ledbetter Equal Pay Act

Press Release

Date: April 22, 2008
Location: Greensboro, NC

State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released the following statement remarking on pay disparity on Equal Pay Day, during the week in which the U.S. Senate is considering the Ledbetter Equal Pay Act.

"Men and women should be earning equal pay for equal work, but in 2008, sadly, this is still not the case. Women still make only 77% of what men do; what kind of a message does that send to our young people and what does that say about us? At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet on a full paycheck and our economy is in shambles, the last thing families need is a paycheck reduced by discrimination.

"The Senate must pass the Ledbetter Equal Pay Act, which would ensure that victims of pay discrimination would be able to hold their employers accountable under existing anti-discrimination laws. We need to be doing more to help families succeed, not less."
