King Disappointed That Some Purposely Delaying Farm Bill

Press Release

Date: April 28, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve King issued the following statement about the Farm Bill. The current federal agriculture law was extended by a week again today. This is the 4th extension since the law officially expired in September 2007. Major Farm Bill work started nearly a year ago.

"For nearly a year, I have worked with bi-partisan members of the U.S. House Agriculture committee for a Farm Bill, but it has become clear that others are standing in our way of getting things done."

"Powerful liberal leaders in Washington feel it benefits them more to wait till next year for a Farm Bill. Their theory is that they'll have a liberal President to work with for a more liberal Farm Bill if they wait for 2009. They want more money for big cities and are already taking it from our farms and rural areas."

"After today's extension of the current farm law, the completion of the Farm Bill will be put off for another week. I'll continue to work with any of my colleagues who are serious about getting a Farm Bill done. The others who want to delay the bill will continue to offer excuses to delay it."

"America's farmers need a Farm Bill now. The world needs a Farm Bill now. Iowa's farmers are heading to the fields. It's time for the work to be done."
