Wicker: Gas Tax "Holiday" a Good First Step

Senator Says More Comprehensive Approach Needed

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today said providing a federal gas tax "holiday" by temporarily suspending the tax was a step in the right direction that would provide temporary financial relief for Mississippians struggling with high gas prices.

"For Mississippians who are struggling to cope with high prices at the gas pump, this would provide immediate and temporary relief during the busy summer months when demand is at its highest," Wicker said. "In addition to helping families, a gas tax suspension would provide needed relief for many small business owners and farmers who rely on transportation to run their businesses."

Wicker added that during this time of economic uncertainty, a gas tax suspension would provide another round of economic stimulus. "Cutting the cost of fuel during the summer months would also act as a boost to our economy by putting more money back into the pockets of working families," Wicker said.

Sen. John McCain announced the proposal today, calling for the federal gas tax to be suspended from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The tax adds 18.4 cents to a gallon of gas and 24.4 cents to a gallon of diesel fuel.

Wicker said a more comprehensive approach was needed to permanently lower energy costs.

"In order to create long-term solutions to our energy problems, we need a comprehensive approach that includes increased domestic exploration, nuclear power, alternative and renewable fuels, as well as increased conservation," Wicker added.
