Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement after the Common Sense English Act reached one hundred bipartisan co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. The legislation, H.R. 4464, ensures employers have the freedom to establish "English in the Workplace" policies should they choose to do so.

"Too often political interest obscures common sense in the public arena," said Rep. Price. "The unjust litigation still facing those who promote speaking English on the job serves as another example that rational thought is under assault. American employers should not fear penalty for operating their business in our founding and principle language.

"The English language has always been fundamental to our unity and vital to the American marketplace. While we celebrate the diverse background of the American people, we must not discourage the promotion of our national identity.

"It is encouraging that so many colleagues from both sides of the aisle have chosen to stand up for greater workplace freedom. Yet we must continue to fight for common sense and ensure that our national accord is protected."

The Common Sense English Act amends Title VII of the Civil Rights Act so that it is NOT an unlawful employment practice for an employer to require an employee to speak English while engaged in work. The bill is designed to give freedom to employers to make workforce decisions and establish "English in the Workplace" policies.
