Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL), a member of the House Trade Working Group, today released the following statement in response to this morning's employment situation report which shows the United States lost 80,000 jobs in March, the third consecutive month of rising unemployment.

"Our economy continues to hemorrhage jobs at an alarming rate, especially from the already hard hit manufacturing industry.

"Enacting a job-killing trade agreement with Colombia—as President Bush has suggested—would only add insult to injury for American workers.

"The fact that President Bush is advocating the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement at a time of recession shows just how out of touch he is with the needs of working families. Instead, we should be taking common sense steps to expand unemployment insurance, fix the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, and make health care more affordable and accessible for average Americans."
