The men and women of our Armed Forces risk their lives every day and do a superb job defending us. As a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, Senator Reed has worked hard to ensure that America's military remains the greatest fighting force in the world and that our soldiers, Marines, sailors, and airmen have the resources they need and the benefits they deserve. A former commander of a paratrooper company, Reed has led the charge to upgrade our military's readiness and provide our troops with the best equipment available. He recently authored an amendment to provide our land forces with more than $10 billion to reset and improve their equipment. Senator Reed has also led efforts to permanently increase the size of the Army and remains a vigilant watchdog over Pentagon spending. Senator Reed supported military action in Afghanistan, but in October 2002 he voted against the Iraq war resolution. He has also vigorously opposed building a costly and ineffective missile defense system because this money could be better spent on counterterrorism efforts, our troops, and much needed equipment for our military.
