Conrad Supports Economic Stimulus Package

Senator Votes in Favor of Targeted Package to Boost Ailing Economy

Senator Kent Conrad helped push an economic stimulus package through the Senate today in an effort to boost the ailing economy and get America back on track.

"Our economy is in a tailspin. Something needs to be done and done quickly," Senator Conrad said. "While this package is not perfect, it dramatically improves upon the existing legislation by targeting those who need the money most — lower- and middle-income taxpayers. They are the economic backbone of America. They are the ones who will help weather the storm."

Senator Conrad — a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee — said he supports the temporary and targeted stimulus package saying it is the best deal to get money into the pockets of Americans.

The proposal approved by the Senate today improves upon the White House's version by adding 20 million seniors and 250,000 disabled veterans to the economic stimulus package. It also includes provisions to prevent illegal immigrants from getting rebate checks.

Earlier in the week, Republican senators blocked a broader stimulus package by Democrats that would have included additional benefits for those facing long-term unemployment. The package also would have given assistance to the hard hit housing industry.

The Senate's stimulus package now goes back to the House of Representatives for a vote. If approved by Congress and the White House the economic stimulus package would provide one-time checks of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples, plus $300 per child. Additional tax cuts would also be available to businesses.
