Governor's Statement About Selection of Mattoon, Illinois, as Site for FutureGen Coal-to-Energy Project

The FutureGen Alliance announced today that Mattoon, Illinois, has been selected as the site for the FutureGen power plant. The next step is for the U.S. Department of Energy to issue a record of decision. In November 2005, Indiana signed a memorandum of understanding with Illinois to partner on the project.

Here is the governor's statement:

"The selection of Central Illinois as the site for FutureGen by the FutureGen Alliance is a major step forward in the era of clean coal, one that could mean jobs for Hoosier miners, construction workers, and engineers. Indiana and Illinois are partners on this project, and our universities are already working on ways to support this new industry.

"With the West Terre Haute plant already operating, the Edwardsport plant moving through the permitting process, and FutureGen scheduled to locate in Mattoon, the Wabash Valley could become the world's center of clean coal technology and progress."
