Congressman Crenshaw Statement on State of the Union Address

Congressman Ander Crenshaw today issued the following statement regarding President Bush's State of the Union Address:

"President Bush's message this evening was one of renewed cooperation and bipartisanship as he set forth a bold agenda to address the issues that face our nation in the year ahead. Although this speech is his final State of the Union, tonight he exhibited the same vigor as he did in his first year as President.

"On the domestic front, despite recent setbacks our economy remains strong. The President highlighted the importance of passing a bi-partisan $150 billion economic growth package that is before Congress this week. This package will help keep our economy on the move by providing tax rebates between $300 and $1,200 for middle class individuals and families.

"The President also championed fiscal responsibility in tonight's address, asking Congress to stop all wasteful and unnecessary earmarks and pledging to ignore any future earmarks not specifically voted on by Congress. Furthermore, his FY09 budget will once again restrain spending, keep taxes low and continue towards a balanced budget.

"He also took this opportunity to thank our troops for their many accomplishments in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, more local leaders have rejected terrorism and have embraced the safety America has proven it can provide. Monthly attacks have decreased 60 percent since June 2007 and thousands of extremists have been captured or killed. By allowing our soldiers to continue their mission, we have provided hope to this corner of the world.

"The President's message is clear and he has laid down the framework for the upcoming year. Now it's time to get to work to ensure a brighter future for America."
