Clyburn Backs Legislation that Supports Our Troops

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding passage of H.R. 1585, the National Defense Authorization Act Conference Report:

"Today, the House passed legislation that will properly equip our troops serving in harms way, and adequately care for those injured soldiers returning home from war. Our brave men and women serving in the military bear insurmountable burdens in defending our freedoms, so it is only fitting that this New Direction Congress pass a bill that provides them with the resources they need both on and off the battlefield.

"H.R. 1585 makes substantial increases in our defense budget for additional armored Humvees and increased protection from IEDs. This appropriations bill also provides our troops with a pay raise and makes vital investments to TRICARE, the United States military's health care plan for military personnel and their dependents.

"Supporting our troops means much more than just providing our armed services personnel with the tools they need to fight al-Qaida and the Taliban. True comprehensive support for our troops includes the broad measures incorporated in H.R. 1585 which tend to the needs of our troops while they serve abroad and when they are redeployed home."
