Clyburn Chides President for SCHIP Veto

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding President Bush's veto of the State Children Health Insurance Program.

"It would appear that the Grinch came early this holiday season, as President Bush has once again vetoed SCHIP legislation and denied vital health care services to millions of needy children.

"Instead of engaging in a bipartisan and bicameral dialogue with Congress on ways to better the lives of our nation's neediest populations, this Administration has chosen to stand in the way of progress with obstructionist vetoes and arbitrary stalling tactics.

"It is time that this President come to grips with reality and understand that children from hard-working American families need immediate assistance and a New Direction. In spite of the President's strong opposition to SCHIP, this Democratic-led Congress remains committed to advancing legislation that makes substantial investments in the vitality and livelihoods of all of our children and grandchildren."
