CANNON OPPOSES MAJORITY BUDGET BUSTING TAX HIKES AND LEGISLATIVE SURPRISES

WASHINGTON DC - Congressman Chris Cannon (R-UT) released the following statement after the announcement of the Democrat tax increase proposal and the stealth introduction of the government run health care expansion as part of SCHIP:

"Today, Democrats unveiled their plan to take more money from the mouths of America's children by taking more of what their parents earn. They also introduced their stealth expansion of government run health care to ensure that America's children are saddled with an ever expanding government bureaucracy. We have now had more than 1000 votes this Congress and accomplished nothing. As long as this majority continues to insist on expanding the government into the doctor's office and the American pocketbook, we will resist. Our children deserve no less."

According to official Congressional Budget Office projections, the "net federal cost to maintain current SCHIP programs" is $7.8 billion over the next five years. This means that in order to allow every State SCHIP program to keep their current enrollment criteria and benefits package for the next five years, it will cost the federal government a total of $7.8 billion above the current $5 billion per year baseline. Yet the Democrat proposal is more than $35 billion.

Thirteen Republicans from fire-stricken districts signed a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday, urging her as ‘a fellow Californian' to postpone the vote. Instead, House Majority leader Steny Hoyer said, "I don't know that there is something happening today that won't be true tomorrow … I don't believe they're going out there to fight the fire."
