Mack: At Long Last, Water Resources Development Act Becomes Law

WASHINGTON - Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) issued the following statement today after the Senate voted to override President Bush's veto of the Water Resources Development Act (H.R. 1495). Today's override means the legislation, which authorizes funding for water infrastructure projects across the country, now becomes law. The House overrode the President's veto on Tuesday night.

Mack said:

"This is a great day for Southwest Florida. After seven years of delay, the Water Resources Development Act has finally been enacted into law.

"This legislation is critical to protecting Southwest Florida's environment and includes projects for Vanderbilt Beach Lagoon; San Carlos Bay, Clam Bayou and Dinkins Bayou on Sanibel Island; and the Caloosahatchee River, among others. In addition, this legislation will help to provide the federal government's proper share of funding for Everglades restoration.

"While we've crossed the first hurdle by finally authorizing funding for these important projects, we must now tackle the next one: appropriating funds to move these projects forward. I hope Congress will begin this process soon so we can continue to do all we can to preserve our fragile and unique ecosystem."
