Baird Announces Funds to Help Communities Expand Economic Opportunities

Today, Congressman Brian Baird (WA-03) announced that Olympia and Thurston County have received three grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Olympia received a $400,681 Community Development Block Grant; Thurston County received a $19,096 American Dream Downpayment Initiative grant, and an $849,666 HOME grant.

"These grants provide an essential tool for communities to provide affordable housing and economic opportunities," said Congressman Baird. "With these funds, Thurston County can continue building on the momentum it has gained and provide services to strengthen the economy, create jobs, provide homeownership opportunities, and retain local businesses."

Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) provide annual funds to states and local governments to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and suitable living environments, and by expanding economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income persons.

American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI) grants promote homeownership opportunities by providing resources for downpayments and closing cost assistance to low-income and minority households.

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to states and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.
