Senate Approves Gregg Amendments To Aid Military Families

U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) today lauded passage of the Fiscal Year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, which was approved by last night by the Senate, 92-3, and contains two amendments he authored to protect and provide for military parents and their children. The amendments will collectively safeguard the interests of military families. The first directs the Secretary of Defense to conduct a study of possible methods to increase support services and programming for children of deployed members of our Armed Forces. The second emphasizes that it is the Sense of the Congress that the Secretary of Defense should establish procedures that ensure that requests by a single parent, or dual-military couple for deferment of deployment due to unforseen circumstances are rapidly evaluated and that adequate steps are taken to ensure the necessary care for the minor dependents.

Senator Gregg stated, "It is critical that we take steps to ensure the safety and well-being of military children, parents and families. These brave men and women have volunteered to serve our country and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their service and the assurance that their own families will always come first. These two amendments will ensure that our military policies are family-friendly and help those who help us as a nation."
