Reaction of U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) to DHS Efforts to Block Lax Illinois Immigration Policy
U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today issued the following statement in response to a Department of Homeland Security lawsuit filed against Illinois for blocking employers from voluntarily using a Federal program to verify the legal status of their employees:
"Governor Blagojevich and his allies in Springfield have made a serious mistake by enacting state law prohibiting employers from voluntarily checking the legal status of their employees.
"Hundreds of employers in Illinois choose to use this system because they want to hire legal residents, and E-Verify is the best tool available for them to ensure they are doing just that. Unfortunately, the Governor has chosen to sign a bill prohibiting employers from participating in this program, making it more difficult for well-intentioned business owners to comply with existing employment laws. That's just wrong.
"I support Federal efforts to repeal this policy and encourage the state legislature to take steps to enforce our nation's immigration laws - not undermine them."
