Congressman Blackburn Statement on Testimony of General David Petraeus
Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today issued the following statement this afternoon:
"General Petraeus effectively reported on both the successes and setbacks in our efforts since he took command earlier this year." Blackburn said. "It is clear that the surge in forces and operations has improved security for the Iraqi people -- which in turn enhances our ability to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq. Attacks on American troops are down, ethno-sectarian murders have declined precipitously, and the counterinsurgency tactics employed by our forces have provided breathing space for significant economic and political progress at the local, tribal and provincial level."
General Petraeus emphasized that while we have moved the initiative from our enemies, we cannot expect a militarily and politically stable Iraq overnight. We have much hard work ahead of us and must continue to push the Maliki government toward reconciliation and reform. But we must be mindful that both General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker made clear in their testimony that failure in Iraq would have a catastrophic effect on our national security."
