Kildee Acts on Michigan Sportsmen's Priorities

Congressional Sportsmen's Week Highlights Importance of Hunting, Fishing, and Outdoor Recreation in Michigan and Across America

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI), a member of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, will act next week on several measures promoting greater hunting, fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation in Michigan and across the country, advancing key priorities of the nearly 38 million sportsmen and women in America. Kildee, a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, has cosponsored three resolutions that commend the ideals of National Hunting and Fishing Day and recognize hunters' continued commitment to safety and the establishment of Hunters for the Hungry programs.

"Sportsmen represent not only an important part of our economy, but our heritage as well," said Kildee. "These men and women are a driving force in many conservation efforts - from protecting our remaining open spaces for all to enjoy, to combating climate change and keeping our rivers and lakes clean. This week, the House is recognizing these important contributions made by so many families here in Michigan."

Every year, hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation activities contribute $250 billion directly and indirectly to the national economy and employ 1.6 million people.

During the week of September 24-28, Congress will commence "Congressional Sportsmen's Week" in an effort to highlight the vital importance of hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation to America's economy, environment, health, and way of life.

Sportsmen's Week will follow National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 22. Legislative activity will include passing resolutions recognizing the important contributions of sportsmen. Congressman Kildee in April, and again in June, requested a hearing on aquatic invasive species. In response to Kildee's request, the House Committee on Natural Resources has scheduled a September 27th subcommittee hearing entitled "Aquatic Nuisance Species." Additionally the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus Foundation will announce the release of a new report detailing the economic impact of the sportsmen's community.
