Statement

Date: Aug. 17, 2007

Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today issued the following statement in response to announcement from Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) that he would be retiring at the end of the 110th Congress.

"When we are old and look back on these days, one of our very greatest honors and memories will be to have served in the United States Congress under the leadership of J. Dennis Hastert as he worked as the longest-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives.

"Representative Hastert's steady, principled character, gracious and unswerving leadership, and his unwavering commitment to preserving liberty and protecting the American people have inspired me through the days I have been privileged to serve beside him. His absence will be felt deeply, but his legacy will never be forgotten."
