Dr. Coburn Comments On General Petraeus' Iraq Report
U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today released the following statement concerning General David Petraeus' report to Congress on the U.S. military efforts in Iraq.
"I have full confidence in General David Petraeus' ability to lead our forces in Iraq and I believe he has done a tremendous job considering the enormity of the challenges in front of him. As Americans, we owe him and every brave soldier a tremendous debt of gratitude for their service and sacrifice," Dr. Coburn said. "As the general, along with Ambassador Ryan Crocker, provides his report on Iraq, I hope the Senate gives fair consideration to his testimony. Congress specifically requested this report be given and they should not simply dismiss its conclusions without hearing them in full; to do otherwise would be disrespectful of the general's hard work and the sacrifice of our troops implementing this new strategy."
"Most of all, regardless of what one believes about the war, Washington, D.C., politicians should not brush aside his report and suggestions for Iraq because they do not fit into a predetermined view of the war. We will find the way forward in Iraq through honest discussion and frank assessment, not questioning the judgment or motives of those with whom we disagree," Dr. Coburn said.
