Press Release: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee Issues Comment on Iowa's Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee issued the following statement about Polk County (IA) District Court Judge Robert Hanson's ruling lifting the state's ban on homosexual marriages, which resulted in at least one same-sex marriage on Friday morning before a stay was put in place:

"Marriage between one man and one woman has been the cornerstone of civilization for more than 5,000 years. Marriage as we know it is the basis of Christian, Muslim and Judaic law. We should not allow individuals and activist judges to put the interests of a few above the interests of
society.

"Iowans, like the majority of people across America, do not support same-sex marriages. Furthermore, the Iowa House represented the majority of Iowans in 2005 when members approved a proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

"On an issue as fundamental as this one, the people of Iowa and across the United States should have an opportunity to express their views by voting on a constitutional amendment. A judge should not be permitted to strike down such a fundamental basis of our society based on his or her opinion when the
people can speak for themselves and choose how they are governed."
