Hare Votes for Major Energy Independence Package

Says Bill is Good for Economy, Environment, National Security

Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) today voted for the New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act which will reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, combat the growing threat of global warming, and invest in jobs and research in Illinois.

"This comprehensive energy independence package is the work of 11 House committees and demonstrates Democrats' commitment to preserving our planet," Hare said. "Developing a 21st century energy policy is good for our economy, environment, and national security."

The bill represents the largest investment in biofuels in American history. Illinois farmers will directly benefit—receiving grants and tax incentives to boost research and production of biodiesel and ethanol.

"The investments this bill makes in alternative energy could create 3 million jobs over the next 10 years—many in Illinois where the biofuels industry is surging," Hare said. "By committing to the production of clean, renewable fuels, we will also reduce energy costs for average Americans."

The bill also takes major steps to diminish the threat of global warming. "We owe this not only to our own children, but to the citizens of the world," Hare said. "The United States has become the world's second largest polluter under the Bush Administration. With this bill, we finally embrace our responsibility as a world leader in the effort to stop global warming."

The bill is instrumental in reducing America's dependence on foreign oil. "We cannot remain vulnerable to the political desires of other nations—many undemocratic—who could cripple us if they choose to cut off our oil supply," Hare said. "Just the threat of higher oil prices allows foreign countries to gain tremendous leverage over our national security. Achieving energy independence will help us better protect the American people."

"This is the dawn of a new direction where alternative energy is a source of American jobs, American pride, and American independence," Hare concluded.
