Drugs in National Forests to Highlight USDA Undersecretary's Visit

Forest Service and Drug Enforcement Agency to unveil counter-narcotics plan, following aerial tour of illegal marijuana fields.

Today Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Visalia) announced that he will be hosting a visit by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Undersecretary Mark Rey on Thursday, August 30, 2007. The Undersecretary is traveling to the 21st Congressional District at the request of Rep. Nunes and will participate in a tour of illegal drug production in the Sequoia National Forest.

"Illegal drug production and trafficking on public lands has become more common and increasingly dangerous. Men, women and children who are enjoying the recreational opportunities afforded by our national forests should not be faced with this criminal threat. I am pleased to host Undersecretary Rey during his visit and look forward to sharing with my constituents a new federal initiative that will target this serious problem," said Rep. Nunes.

On Thursday at 10:30 AM PST a press conference will be held at the California Army National Guard facility, 5168 E. Dakota Avenue, Fresno. During this conference, Undersecretary Rey will unveil a new strategic plan. This plan, which was prepared at the request of Rep. Nunes, details new federal efforts to combat drug production in our national forests.
