CARNEY: PROUD TO SUPPORT OUR FARMERS

Congressman Christopher P. Carney praised the Farm Bill Extension Act of 2007 which passed today in the House of Representatives by a vote of 231 to 191.

"I was proud to support legislation that delivers critical results for our farmers and rural communities," said Congressman Carney. "I am grateful to the House Agriculture Committee Chairman Colin Peterson and his committee, particularly Congressman Tim Holden. Their efforts ensured that Northeast and Central Pennsylvania farms will have sustainable and affordable agriculture policies in place for years to come. This legislation makes historic investments in conservation, nutrition and renewable energy while maintaining a strong safety net for America's farmers."

This legislation extends the Milk Income Loss Contract Program until 2012, a program which has provided real results in Northeast Pennsylvania and will be a continued, long term benefit to dairy farm communities. In addition, this legislation reestablished the Dairy Forward Pricing Program and applies the Dairy Research and Promotion Program to dairy product importers. "This will benefit our farming communities locally and maintain the high standards we have for our dairy products," said Carney.

Carney continued, "I am glad that this bill includes the Federal Milk Marketing Order Review Commission. As the bill makes it way to the U.S. Senate and then to conference, I look forward to working with my colleagues from Pennsylvania, New York and Vermont to ensure that the costs of feed and energy are taken into account when determining the Class 1 milk price mover."

The legislation approved today was supported by a broad range of farm, conservation and nutrition organizations including: the American Farm Bureau, the National Farmers Union, the Council of Northeast Farmer Cooperatives, the National Milk Producers Federation, The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, The Wildlife Society, and American Farmland Trust, Second Harvest, Voices for America's Children, and the NCS Food Program Association.
