Intercity passenger rail is essential to a balanced national transportation system. Every day Amtrak relieves traffic congestion, reduces pollution, and provides vital transportation options for those who don't drive or fly.
Delaware is home to major Amtrak facilities in Bear and Wilmington, providing over 1,000 jobs and an annual payroll of over $53,000,000. Nationally, Amtrak carries 25 million passengers a year. It deserves the type of federal commitment we have already given to the highway and aviation systems. Yet in every other advanced industrial economy, and in most developing nations as well, passenger rail receives more funding and support than in the United States.
Senator Biden is the acknowledged Senate leader in the effort to establish a national passenger rail system on strong financial footing, and to increase its contribution to a cleaner, safer, more efficient transportation network. Since the attacks of 9/11, Senator Biden has fought to provide increased security for rail passengers.
