ENGEL VOTES AGAINST AMERICORPS BUDGET CUTS

Congressman Eliot Engel voted against an amendment to cut the Americorps budget by 10 percent this week during full House consideration of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill (HR 3043).

Rep. Engel said, "During this bill's consideration, an amendment to cut the Americorps budget by 10 percent, or $25.5 million, was introduced. This was ill-considered, I thought, so I went to the floor of the House to urge my colleagues to vote against it. The Americorps program does great work across the country and in my District, it has accomplished a great deal. Thankfully the budget-cutting amendment failed by a vote of 182-242."

The House measure now awaits action by the full Senate.

Another amendment would have completely cut the Americorps budget, eliminating the program, and prohibiting 70,000 Americorps volunteers from obtaining education awards that help them pay for college education. Rep. Engel also voted against this, and it failed by an even larger margin of 96-334.
