Pelosi: We Are Making the House Family-Friendly for New Mothers

Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced the opening of facilities in the Cannon House Office Building to serve the needs of nursing mothers who are congressional employees. It is the first House room provided solely to meet the needs of nursing mothers, many of whom share an office so have nowhere to go for privacy.

"Many women face great challenges in managing both motherhood and career," Pelosi said. "In order for the House to continue to attract and maintain the brightest and most committed public servants, we must ensure that it becomes a family-friendly place to work. This is a step in the right direction."

Operated and maintained by the Office of Attending Physician (OAP), the nursing room will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nursing mothers will have access to state-of-the-art equipment. All OAP nurses are trained in providing instruction and are available upon request.
