Rep. McCarthy Legislation Passes House Education and Labor Committee

Today, the House Committee on Education and Labor unanimously passed Rep. McCarthy's Generations Invigorating Volunteering and Education (GIVE) Act. This legislation renews Congress' support for volunteerism and strengthens the partnership with local organizations.

"National service has a distinguished and strong history in our nation," said McCarthy. "Through the work of volunteers, communities develop, children are educated and seniors remain active. The GIVE Act recognizes the important role volunteers play in our society and supports their efforts both locally and nationally."

Today's Committee vote marks the first Congressional action dealing with service organizations in over 10 years. Since being named Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities in February, Rep. McCarthy has held two Congressional hearings on the issue and successfully moved legislation through Committee, clearing the path for House Floor consideration.

"Every American, old and young, has skills that can improve the day to day functions of our society," said McCarthy. The GIVE Act encourages individuals to get involved and fosters a deeper commitment to service in this nation. I am confident the House will move swiftly and pass this important legislation."
