NELSON: SENATE ENERGY BILL WILL BOOST RENEWABLE FUELS

The United States Senate last night passed legislation to diversify our nation's energy sources, promote conservation and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of fuel.

Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson joined 64 of his colleagues in voting in favor of the legislation. Nelson issued the following statement:

"In just a few years, ethanol has become a major industry in Nebraska and a major source of fuel across the nation. It is time to expand on that success."

"This new legislation will continue to allow for the growth of ethanol, while also promoting other biofuels, such as those derived from cellulosic material. Critically, the bill will raise the Renewable Fuel Standard to 36 billion gallons by 2022, more than half of which would have to come from advanced biofuels. It also provides resources for more biofuel research.

"Now that the energy bill has passed, I will work with my colleagues on the Agriculture Committee to continue to promote the use and development of renewable fuels through the upcoming farm bill."
