Gov. Sanford Issues Statement on Supreme Court Arguments

Location: Columbia, SC

Columbia, S.C. - December 3, 2003 - Governor Mark Sanford today issued the following statement
on the oral arguments held this morning before the South Carolina Supreme Court in the
Sloan v. Sanford case:

"I've said from the beginning that whatever the Supreme Court decides I'm going to abide by, period," Gov. Sanford said. "I've always subscribed to the notion of separate, co-equal branches of government and it's clearly the job of the Supreme Court to interpret the Constitution. We think the Constitution is with us in this case, and ultimately, I'd like to continue serving the Reserve because I think it makes me a better father as well as a better governor. There's a real value in being at the bottom of the leadership chain just as there's a real value in leading by example for my kids, all of whom I'd like to see serve in the military at some point."
