Rep. Solis Speaks At First Annual Baldwin Park High School Environmental Awareness/Career Day

Today, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) was the keynote speaker at the first annual Baldwin Park High School Environmental Awareness/Career Day. The event was hosted by the National Hispanic Environmental Council.

Solis, who recently returned from a bi-partisan global warming fact finding tour to Greenland, Germany, and the United Kingdom, is a member of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and House Committee on Energy and Commerce. She is also the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Task Force on Health and the Environment.

"This is a unique opportunity for high school students to start learning about the new demand for individuals to go into careers associated with the environment and natural resources," Congresswoman Solis said. "In my discussions with scientists and government officials, it became apparent that while we must take action on global warming, it will be up to our youth to be innovative drivers of policy and new technology to bring our nation into the next century."

The event gave Baldwin Park High School students an opportunity to learn about topics and careers associated with the environmental and natural resources fields. The event featured exhibits by Los Angeles area environmental agencies (federal, state, city and county), as well as local green groups, corporations, and others.

Solis is creating legislation that will support efforts to train workers in the skills needed to succeed in the green economy, which includes energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. This type of job training can help workers become economically secure by training them for jobs which have higher wages and access to benefits, while ensuring that our nation's work force can meet industry demands and boost America's global competitiveness.

A major national investment in renewable energy could create 3.5 million green collar jobs over a 10 year period.
