By: Anika Clark and Anna Haigh

"Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney spoke to more than 100 people at the Colony Mill Marketplace in Keene this morning, touching on support for the 2nd Amendment, more funding for troops, the need to develop alternative sources of energy and keeping health care a free-market system.

"'The American people are the real source of our strength,' he said, adding later, 'We need to strengthen the American people, not strengthen the American government.'

"Seeking the Republican nomination for president in 2008, Romney arrived at the marketplace flanked by former state senator Thomas R. Eaton and Cheshire County Attorney Peter W. Heed, and joined by his son, Tagg.

"In introducing Romney, Eaton announced he is now a member of Romney's New Hampshire steering committee, and praised Romney's leadership abilities.

"'He's not afraid to make a decision and move forward,' Eaton said.

"Romney also emphasized the need to reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil, and said teachers need more support and more pay to keep education strong.

"He said it would be wrong for the federal government to take over education and health care, and said strong American families are the country's future."
